Reducing Image Size

Photos created through scanning or digital photography are often too large for immediate use. Most images will need to be reduced in size. Following are the steps to accomplish this.

  1. First crop your image to remove any unnecessary portions of the picture.
  2. Change the overall pixel dimensions. Photo editing software have commands for changing the pixel dimensions of an image. Look for a command called "Image Size," "Resize," or "Resample." When you use this command you will be presented with a dialog box for entering the exact pixels you wish to use. Make the width no greater than 400 pixels. (Other options you may find in the dialog are: Resample—You need this on when sizing down. This enables the software to change the pixel dimensions. Constrain proportions or keep aspect ratio—You want this option enabled. It prevents the image from being stretched and distorted. When this option is enabled, you only need to enter one value—height or width—and the other value will adjust automatically.)
  3. Never, ever resize and overwrite your original file!
  4. After sizing the image, be sure to do a Save As so you don't overwrite your original, high resolution file.
  5. Save as a JPEG file.
  6. When choosing the compression level, keep quality in the medium to high range.
  7. You want to shoot for a file size of 30 to 100 KB per image.

NOTE: If you are running Windows, you can use MSPaint to resize your images. Here are the steps to accomplish this.

  1. Open Paint (look in Start>Programs>Accessories)
  2. Select File > Open > YourFileName
  3. Select Edit > Select All—a box will form around your image.
  4. Select one of the corners of your photo, and while holding the mouse button down, drag inwards to resize.
  5. Resave your image at its smaller size.
  6. Click on Image > Attributes to view image size. Anything less than 6" or 400 pixels wide at 75 dpi should upload with no problem.

NOTE: If you are running a Mac, do this with Photoshop or GraphicConverter.
